The Remington 740 is a semi-automatic rifle that was produced by Remington Arms from 1955 to 1960. It is chambered for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge and was designed as a hunting rifle. The 740's action is similar to that of the Remington 870 shotgun, with a reciprocating bolt and a side-mounted ejector. It also features a detachable box magazine and a rotating safety located at the rear of the trigger guard. The 740 was succeeded by the Remington 742, which was redesigned to address some of the issues that were found with the 740's design. Despite its short production life, the Remington 740 remains a popular rifle among hunters and shooters alike.
